Part 3 - Setting the inner shader, and render

In the new shader, we are going to make two simple changes. First we will remove the Alpha channel by setting it to ‘None’ and in the Color channel we are going to tick the ‘invert color’ box. In a real project you would probably want to create and load a new texture for this, but for this simple tutorial this will do to ensure we can see the inner surface.

Setting shader 1

And now it's time for a quick render. I've gone into the render room, selected a medium quality preset (making sure the 'Light through transparency' and 'Bump mapping' options are enabled) and got this:

Render of the two spheres.

Not bad for a few minutes work.

You can naturally save this into your ‘My Shaders’ browser slot and re-use at will.
Doing this tutorial got the words ‘That’s no moon…’ into my head, I can't imagine why, so...

That's no moon...

This is just a couple of boolean ops on the sphere first, plus adding a third sphere with the lighting texture on it and the stock 'Earth' from Carrara's presets. A few tweaks to the lighting and the textures and Shazzam! InstaDeathStar, just add Vader.

That's it! Hope you liked the tutorial, and thanks for reading. There are copies of the textures and the Carrara scene files available on the downloads page.

Please feel free to comment via my blog, there is a post linking to this tutorial which can be found here.
