Part 1 - setting up the scene

To start with, I have created a new, empty, large sized scene in Carrara and added a Sphere of 428m diameter, placed at the world centre:

Default Carrara scene with sphere

I have then duplicated it, named the duplicate 'Sphere 2' and then resized the new sphere down to 425m diameter:

Duplicate Sphere... Resize sphere to 425m

This gives me two spheres, one inside the other. Select the first sphere, and enter the texture
editor. We are going to apply a texture to the sphere made up of three elements, Colour, Alpha
and Bump. These are the three textures I shall use for this:

Table showing bitmaps for textures
Panels with rust and dirt This is the basic colour texture. The panels are shades of grey
and the rust and dirt are just smudges of colour that are blurred
and stretched. The rust is a separate layer so that I can use the
panels ‘clean’ if I wish. The texture is 1500x1500.
Alpha mask for texture This is the Alpha texture. It is pure black and white (i.e. 2 bit)
with black being transparent when applied. Again it is 1500x1500 pixels.
Bump map for panels This is the bump, which is just the plain panels greyscaled and
then the brightness and contrast mucked about with.
