To start with, I have created a new, empty, large sized scene in Carrara and added a Sphere of 428m diameter, placed at the world centre:

I have then duplicated it, named the duplicate 'Sphere 2' and then resized the new sphere down to 425m diameter:

This gives me two spheres, one inside the other. Select the first sphere, and enter the texture
editor. We are going to apply a texture to the sphere made up of three elements, Colour, Alpha
and Bump. These are the three textures I shall use for this:

This is the basic colour texture. The panels are shades of grey and the rust and dirt are just smudges of colour that are blurred and stretched. The rust is a separate layer so that I can use the panels ‘clean’ if I wish. The texture is 1500x1500. |

This is the Alpha texture. It is pure black and white (i.e. 2 bit) with black being transparent when applied. Again it is 1500x1500 pixels. |

This is the bump, which is just the plain panels greyscaled and then the brightness and contrast mucked about with. |
